The Barbershop Subculture

"Barbering isn't a job. It's an art form, a culture, and a lifestyle."

A right of passage from a boy to a man is knowing the value of getting the right cut for your face shape that also works to compliment your sense of style. Paying a routine visit to your barber goes to show that you know how to take care of your body by getting a proper clean up to your look. I'm by no means saying you need to get a cut every week or two weeks (nobody got time or money for that), but making sure you look clean and fresh, perhaps go every 3-4 weeks - this depends on how fast your hair grows.

The new wave of barbershops for men when it comes to getting a cut is to create a comfortable, socially connective hub for men to talk sports, hang out, maybe grab a cold beer and catch up with what's been going on in each others lives. Gone is the idea of only women needing to go to the salon to get a new look or using it as an opportunity to pamper themselves. As what salons and hair stylists mean to women, barbershops and barbers equally mean the same thing to men; the only difference is, men seem to go more frequently than women.

To find the right place with barbers whom you can trust to give you a clean cut from the moment you sit down on that chair is no easy task - for a man to give a barber complete trust in touching his hair is not something that just happens over night.

All you dudes out there.. Can you agree with me on this one?

On a side note, I think I may have finally found my go-to barbershop in Toronto - Hollow Ground.

After doing lots of reading of reviews and research online of well-known barbershops in town, Hollow Ground is in my opinion THE place in Toronto to get a proper cut. Cracking in the top 5 of BlogTO's list of best barbershops in Toronto, their revered reviews and positive comments left by previous customers stand absolutely true - you can simply see it in the way they cut! These guys really know the craft of cutting hair and doesn't skimp out on the details when it comes to calling themselves barbers. Fades, undercuts, comb-overs, line-ups on the back and sides, straight razor on the back - they really know it all.

Just tell them what you want and watch them cut away to the look you have imagined in your mind. Always open to try something different if you're looking to get a new look, they offer a good sense of what works for your face shape and provides suggestions as to what you are going for.

If you're ever looking to get a fresh cut, be sure to check these guys out.

Be warned though... They only do walk-ins and often have a long list of guys needing a cut as well. So plan ahead and expect a wait, but you'll definitely be in good hands cause these guys really know how to fix you up with a nice fade and tapered cut.

As Kanye would say... Got a fresh cut, straight out the salon bish #uhhuhhoney
