On the Radar: FKA twigs

Psychedelic, visually-mesmerizing and at times, uncomfortably drug addled, FKA twigs seems to have this ability to pull viewers into another visual and audio world never explored before by any other artist. In the visual aspect, her stunning imagery really pushes the boundaries to the point where you will likely utter the words "what-did-I-just-watch". Her sound can be regarded as a mix of heavy synths and engaging beats that are experimental, futuristic, and a tad bit eerie in the sense that she may not be very receptive for those used to watching things that are easy to stomach.

But what FKA twigs does so well is how she unconventionally comes through on strong aesthetics, powerful percussions and simple, yet haunting lyrics that seem to drive home a deeper message than what is on the surface level.

Analyzing "Water Me," she reflects on the idea of how relationships must work in balance in order to see it to the end. Both parties must be wiling to offer and give up something on each end in order for a relationship to truly grow. Open to interpretation, I believe that when she calls for her lover to "water" her, she is in a sense yearning for a more nourishing relationship than simply the physicality of love. However, her "setting the fee" requires time and energy, which her lover says is "too much in pounds." Because of this, her lover renders her as "too small" or unfit to be with her anymore. Hence, as tough as this decision may be, she comes to the realization to finally say, "I guess I'm stuck with me."

Bound to leave you feeling either intrigued for more or incredibly uncomfortable, FKA twigs is definitely someone who does not shy away from the extremely dense content. Just off her well-reviewed debut albumLP1, FKA twigs is surely an artist you want to check out.
