Suede Creeper Sneakers - PUMA x Rihanna Collaboration

I have never done a feature on womenswear before, so this is stepping a little out of my comfort zone (which I hope you are willing to do too after this post!), but figured that this is a good place to start where music, sneakers and womenswear come together.

Ever since Jenn Im first introduced me to the existence of Creepers, I have always found them to give the girls who wear them such an edgy, bad-ass look. Given how chunky they may look, it's true that Creepers are often more difficult to style than other types of footwear.  But don't be discouraged - with the right outfit, they are totally statement worthy without having to say too much!

For those who are unfamiliar with the shoe (and no, they didn't originate from the Andy Samberg music video "The Creep", the Creepers were actually more formally known as the "Brothel Creepers," which were first worn by the desert soldiers in World War II. The elevated platform served the purpose of providing stability in unpredictable climates and terrain, but soon found its place in the underground London punk rock scene in  the 1970's. Most notably, the Teddy Boys were recognized as the first music group to popularize the Creepers as they were first seen wearing them as they began the subculture movement of their slow shuffle dance - "The Creep". Soon seen on the feet of many punk rock enthusiasts in popular London nightspots, the Creepers became a distinguishing style piece in mainstream fashion.

Perfect for this time of year when Fall leaves and large puddles are obstacles to avoid when you trek along campus grounds, venture out of your comfort zone by tying together more Fall feminine looks (pencil skirts and silk blouses) with this kind of grungy footwear. Or if you're simply looking to go all in for a bold look, pairing edgier materials, such as leather and black denim, are also great options that will go well with a pair of Creepers. For those who pay attention to the finer style details and are looking to fully complete their outfit, this is also the perfect chance to expose your favorite patterned socks to go with the Creepers for a bit of fun! Speaking for myself, I definitely appreciate it when I see girls wearing them for a more edgy feminine look.

If this look seems a little too bold for your liking, the perfect starting point for those who are intrigued by the idea of wearing such an edgy shoe, yet a little afraid to take the first step, is the recent collaboration by singer Rihanna and classic sportswear brand PUMA titled PUMA PUMA (how clever right?). As an accomplished singer who has also branched out into other artistic outlets, Rihanna represents the modern day bad-ass female figure who isn't afraid to challenge the existing norms. Her first ever sneaker collaboration couldn't have been a better pairing for her, as she brings her edge in the form of an updated platform rubber sole to ingeniously pairing it with the simple classic Puma Suede sneaker to bring back the feel of the punk rock era. The shoe ultimately achieves the perfect utilitarian, tom-boy look (as well as also subtly giving that extra height to those who want it).

For those stuck on deciding whether to be a little bit rebel or a little bit punk, look no further and get your hands on a pair of these athletic-creeper shoes here!
