8 Fall Transition Menswear Essentials

Yes, it's that time of year, again.

Looming deadlines, midterms/paper season and before you know it, that's the end of the Fall school semester.

Rather than pulling out what you wear to school all the time (to the point where you're running out of possible combinations to mix-and-match outfit pieces) and breaking free from the routine you have grown so accustomed to (since what you wear should be the one thing that shouldn't be a routine), why not spruce it up this time around? It's time to dress sharp for a fresh look come the mid-way point of the Fall school semester.

Here are 8 Fall menswear essentials to give you some inspiration for an updated look approaching the middle of Fall that will surely garner that double-look as you waltz onto school stomping grounds.

Selvedge denim shirt

Choosing to go with a thicker denim fabric in place of the common linen shirts guys have worn day in and day out is key to this Fall. Keeping you that much warmer, while adding an effortless touch of style by simply choosing a more rugged indigo fabric screams that you know how to prepare for the chilly winds of Fall. Playing it one step ahead is always a smart move, gentlemen.

Camel topcoat

This piece right here is one of the reasons to get excited for Fall. I've been searching high and low for the perfect camel topcoat to keep me warm and am still on the hunt (welcoming any suggestions as to where to look!). The topcoat that cuts off or is lengthened to drape just past the knees should give not only a structured look to complete your layered outfit underneath, but more so, can act as a statement piece on its own. The camel color is the go-to for the Fall as the neutral, unassuming palette allows for one to play around with what you can layer within (like a denim piece!). Trust me when I say this is THE piece to own this Fall!

Ripped jeans

The ripped jeans is an art form blessed by the denim gods. There are many forms of it, but to find the right pair with just the right amount and type of distress is again no easy task that one may just have to go on odyssey to look for it.  Running the risk of overdoing it or not getting enough distress, ripped jeans constitute (to a degree) a measurement of how comfortable you are with fashion. I tend to lean more towards the go-big-or-go-home mentality where I welcome distressed patches all over with cut-outs for the knees showing, but for more modest denim-wearers, that would just be blasphemous. At the end of the day, how much distress is up to you; just don't take it so serious.

And for the women out there, keep wearing the ripped, distressed jeans cause when you wear them right, boy it sure looks on you - especially with a nice pair of minimalistic heels... Click here to check out just what I mean for the women's how-to-guide for ripped jeans outfits by Just The Design.

Marled-wool sweater

In my opinion, there is nothing better than wearing a cozy mixed/speckled-wool sweater come the Fall time. Comfy for either lounging around or dressed up with a more structured blazer to a dinner party, this piece is so versatile on many occasions this Fall. For the daring, a dark red or brownish-yellow gives off the autumn vibe, but for those like myself, who tend to stick with more neutrals, a warm grey, cream white or black is also a great option to own!

Leather biker/moto-jacket

A couple years back, this would not be a piece I would see myself wearing, but after trying on the leather jacket look for myself, my perspective completely changed. On the clothes hanger, a leather moto-jacket may look a little intimidating or a little too much of a functional piece restricted only for men with bikes. However, after putting it on, the sleek leather fit hugging tight to your body really made the look go well with a nice pair of boots and black jeans. Next time around, take a step out of your comfort zone and try it on. You just might have the same revelation as me!

Wide-brimmed wool hat (black or dark brown)

Now this is the understatement accessory you are looking for to round out your outfit. Although you might not be a hat person initially, I assure you that finding the perfectly structured head piece will wipe all those doubts in your mind. Mind you, it's no easy task to find the right hat to complement your face shape, but trust me, once that is done, it'll be hard to mess anything up.

White, leather sneakers

I'm not going to front and say that I'm not guilty of jumping on the same bandwagon of all the fashion bloggers of incorporating the white lifestyle sneaker into all possible outfits. How can you argue at pairing clean sneakers to any outfit? However, choosing quality over just any white sneaker is what separates you from the rest. Personally, the Common Projects Achilles Low will always be the holy grail model of the combined luxury-accent, lifestyle leather sneaker to own. However, at a lower price range, the adidas white sneaker trilogy: Stan Smith Leather trainers, Originals Superstars and (the super low-key underrated) Rod Lavers are also worth a consideration as well!

Chelsea boot

Yes, Kanye may have worn it on multiple occasions and yes, he may or may not have popularized the look amongst many trendy menswear outfit grids, but there is a reason behind why that is so. The Chelsea boot is a classic touch to men who want to get into owning a pair of boots without looking too functional or clunky. The suede material gives the Chelsea boot a much more casual look in comparison to Red Wing leather boots, which offer a more outdoor-ready look (although also great to own for this Fall!). Often a good choice of boot to go with a pair of slim and/or ripped jeans, as mentioned above. Look out for the Chelsea boot this Fall, if you see them on the shelf for a different look that you may not be used to initially - the results of wearing them will surprise you!
