2015 Review of Top 50 Favorites from 'The Sartorialist'

'Style' as a concept has been hijacked to mean elite, refined and expensive when it should be thought of as a basic expression of life in much the same way as we all identify with music or speech.

At the end of the day style is communication.

Those that get to know me know that I can be quite knit-picky when it comes to things that catch my eye, especially when it comes to fashion and styling. However, I'm also one of those people that can get sucked into buying a piece simply because of one tiny, simple feature, like where a button or pocket is placed or when a contrasting texture detail is added to a piece.

From a years worth of street style photos, I have distilled down 50 of my favorites - in no particular order. For each of these snapshots, see what catches my eye as I highlight my favorite feature / detail / take away from each look.

Disclaimer: all photos were taken by Scott Schuman from thesartorialist.com

the fit of the toque and patterned scarf really stand out here

everything about the two looks scream a very casual understated personal style,
especially loving the socks and shoe combination

the quilted elongated jacket; the pants also cut off at the perfect length - just enough of a sock peek

the camel tan look up top paired with a contrasting tartan-pattern for bottoms;
the loose-fitting jacket works very nicely (proportion-wise) with the bell-bottom pants
as she doesn't look like she's drowning in fabric

the sleeve proportions of this look; also, the perfect choice of buttons on this light trench-coat

the back slit detailing on this shirt

PSA: all girls should own a razor back dress - in black obviously; also, notice the weaved belt detail

red and black will forever be a classic color combination for women to make a bold statement;
the knit patterned top paired with a free-flowing dress really makes her look stand out here

love/hate moment: everything about the grid look hits the mark, minus the sandals -
would replace with classic wingtip brogues or oxfords
(giving him the benefit of the doubt that he was rushing out the door this morning...)

if you know me, the one pattern in fashion that I am not a fan of whatsoever is plaid,
but for some odd reason, this look does it (while looking super comfy);
also, nice buckle detail on those shoes

the geometric pattern on those pants - the look gives off a very European/Parisian vibe

a simple yet refined look - the all white outfit is undeniably a great look for the summer;
also, those white strapped heels top it off

for all the guys out there, a classic dark grey suit will never be out of style,
but the real winner here are the two b's: the beard and bicycle

really like the pairing of a classic shoulder-baring top with a long pleated skirt

from a larger grid pattern to a more refined checkered pattern -
loving how this moment was perfectly captured

the layering of this look and an interesting heel boot;
also, notice how the guy at the back is wearing mismatched socks (wonder if he's realized yet...)

the black rimmed glasses to an all navy outfit

the knitted elongated white shawl;
for some reason, I really like the look of girls leaving an outer-piece free-standing on the shoulder, perhaps it's how it looks effortlessly chic - like how it acts as an additional layering piece

the 1-800-detailing on this dress paired with a cropped military style mid-jacket

this marks the first time I've seen a denim one-piece outfit and the knit circle-scarf completes the look

don't know if this was intentional, but I love how her glasses frames match her super cozy navy outfit

mustard yellow looks are tough to pull off well -
allowing this color palette to stand on its own by pairing it with classic black and white

really liking this relaxed look; the pleated grey pants stand out

need I say more about a classic leather moto jacket?
also, the sunglasses here are worth a mention

how the scarf is tied so effortlessly to the bag

these are cropped pants, not a skirt! perfect definition of business-casual

the detailing on the pants stand out for me here but overall, I just really like this simple look

the specked grey pants with black boots

dressing down a fur outerwear piece with a chunk knit sweater and ripped jeans - great city look

the cutting of this look is unreal; notice, how the outerwear piece flares out just enough
to pair nicely with a lace piece sitting on top of the skirt.
the tie on the strapped heel is also just perfect

pairing the Reebok Pump Fury in a bold red, safari-print to a refined look up top

again, sticking with the b's: the boots and bike

can't quite pin-point what that pattern is (which makes it that much more wonderful!),
but a sharp statement piece

need I say more as to what stands out?

the messenger bag - reminds me of the one by Filson

need to take pointers as to how to tie/knot my scarves like this

the loud print blazer paired with a red velvet bag;
also, her ring accessories really work to fully complete her outfit

the polka dots on her topcoat

the ruffles on the sleeves and neck (perhaps this is of a blouse?) paired with a nice-fitting sweater color - much applause to pulling off a brave look

the wool skirt (with pockets!) here is the key through the journey of more success

the open-faced blazer with Japanese inspirations - look at how it is tied together at the waist

there's something about backless tops... JT says it best

trust me, you can never go wrong with a double-breasted blazer - case and point

the cutting of this dress is really unique - definitely caught my attention right off the bat

it's all about the slick hair

the embroidered skirt paired with a short-sleeve oxford shirt

a herringbone topcoat with the perfect buttons to go with it

in an age where girls are known to steal their boyfriend's pieces or rummage through the men's section for new pieces, this role-reversal of guys drawing inspiration from the female closet is everything.
don't go claiming for gender equality, if you can't accept this.

the real winner is the skirt worn by the girl in white

the frayed light denim skirt gives one some early summer inspirations
