"Right now, we are all about simplicity, interesting compositions and finding the perfect fit. Stepping outside the trend circle, in search of that everlasting coat, the perfect pair of boots or a 'wear whenever or wherever' dress."
I really couldn't have said this better myself than coming from the wise words of Ann-Sofie Johansson, the Creative Head of Design for the globally-popular Swedish brand, Hennes & Mauritz (H&M).
If you didn't know already, H&M is known for their high-end designer collaborations (from the previous Isabelle Murant collection to the upcoming Alexander Wang collection, which is finally hitting in-stores and online this early November) and for their quick turnover production of look-alike fashion pieces seen on the runways at an affordable price point.
Thus, because of the latter reason, it is extremely refreshing to see such a large world-wide brand often labelled for its fast fashion to take a step back in assembling a collection that truly reflects their understanding in the importance of pushing out timeless essential pieces that should be found in everyone's wardrobe.
In the article titled "The Perfect Wardrobe" (read below or here), Ann-Sofie nails the concept of owning high quality, composition pieces in one's wardrobe in order to achieve effortless versatility when it comes to transitioning from the workplace smoothly into after-work festivities. As she accurately brings up, today's fashion is all about owning classic pieces with a modern twist, rather than chasing trendy styles. There is absolutely nothing wrong with loving simple outfits. Rather, there is something about simplistic, subdued color schemes that are coming in strong throughout this year's collections and will be here to stay for long.
"There is a tendency in fashion right now that goes towards a certain simplicity, something that is modern, but grown up rather than trendy."
Keeping true to the rules of good fit, sharp tailoring, and classic cuts to timeless pieces, some items will never be out of fashion. For men, white shirts (IMO better with a minimal collar), a tailored dark navy suit (a must have for every man), and well-fitted wool jacket (IMO gravitate towards the mixed wool); For women, the little black dress (IMO back cut-outs or a different material will give it that modern twist to the classic), minimal black ankle strapped heels/black leather short booties (all black errythaang), and classic camel beige trench coat (helloooo, Burberry).
How many times have you bought the latest, most trendiest item or print but ended up only wearing it for that one or if you're lucky, two occasions because it was so hard to pair with what you had in your closet?
By owning staple essentials in your closet, mixing and matching more trendy pieces of different compositions become FAR much easier because you have something as a base to work with. For many people, putting together outfits in the morning can be difficult simply because the base pieces are not there. For those just starting to build up their wardrobe, I can't stress the importance of not rushing into chasing all the latest fashion trends and neglecting the importance of picking up high quality items that will last you a long time and can also be worn on all types of occasions. Besides, both of these things point to being good investments and being absolutely worth the buck in the long run,
Don't waste your money and time in what doesn't last.
Chase everlasting, not trends.

THE PERFECT WARDROBE
This month, H&M launches a series of timeless, modern, and highly essential fashion items. The Modern Classic Premium Collection is one step closer to building the perfect wardrobe.
Right now, we are all about simplicity, interesting compositions and finding the perfect fit. Stepping outside of the trend cycle, in search of that everlasting coat, the perfect pair of boots or a ‘wear whenever or wherever dress’.
– There is a tendency in fashion right now that goes towards a certain simplicity, something that is modern, but grown up rather than trendy. And that’s where it all started; creating this collection felt important this season, says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s Creative Head of Design.
The Modern Classic Premium Collection will be available in selected stores and online from September 18th. The collection features a series of essential wardrobe items, as well as some statement pieces – and a few must-have accessories like the perfect everyday boots, soft knit cashmere blend beanies and great leather bags.
– It is easy to create different outfits, everything goes together really well. We want this collection to have a long life, you should be able to wear it for many seasons, says Ann-Sofie Johansson.
The design team chose a subdued colour scheme for the collection, focusing on fit and quality.
– We’ve worked a lot with the composition, mixing materials to create an interesting look.
There are also some party elements in the collection, like a sheer sequin top and a current take on the little black dress.
– I like the idea of going out for dinner and drinks, coming straight from the office. Maybe you’d wear a blazer over a sequin top at work, and then just remove the blazer and add a pair of heels to your look before you go out for dinner.
The Modern Classic Premium Collection is truly about building the perfect wardrobe; it even has a pair of embossed leather sneakers in the mix.
– Everyone wears sneakers now! We wanted to make a really nice sneaker, one that you could wear with a nice coat. It adds some coolness to a classic look – a combination that we truly love.
